Sanjeev Kumar Gangwar's debut story collection arrives in his silver jubilee year as a writer — twenty-five years of craft concentrated into eleven stories that feel nothing like a first book. Gangwar writes about familiar subjects — mental suffering, desire, market pressures, everyday cruelty — but the eleven pieces here find angles on those subjects that feel newly discovered rather than recycled. His characters carry their own weight; several of them are likely to stay with a reader considerably longer than the stories' short pages would suggest. The prose is accessible without being thin, moving quickly enough to be read in a sitting but with enough underneath to reward a second pass.
