Connecting With the Mahabharata

byNeera Misra,Rajesh Lal

A scholarly yet accessible guide that restores the geography, history, and philosophy behind the Mahabharata.

Overview

The Mahabharata has outlasted every empire it describes, yet most readers encounter it stripped of the geography, history, and cultural context that gave it meaning. Neera Misra and Rajesh Lal set out to restore that context — mapping the epic's geo-spatial landscape, decoding what the word 'Mahabharata' actually signifies, and tracing the living threads that connect a text composed millennia ago to the way Indians understand Dharma today.

The authors argue that reading the Mahabharata in isolation from its historical and geographic ground produces a flattened text. By grounding the narrative in place, in itihasa as a category of knowledge, and in the philosophical claims the epic makes for itself — that whatever exists in the world exists within it — they open a way of reading that treats the work as a living document rather than a cultural relic.

For anyone who wants to move beyond the familiar storyline and understand why this epic continues to serve as an answer book for daily life, this is the entry point.

Connecting With the Mahabharata is a landmark work in simplifying knowledge of its history, geo-spatial landscape and cultural heritage, and connects all to the roots of a bygone time that has lived with us till date, inspiring those who cherish their history and culture to follow our 'Dharma. It sets the tone and template in understanding the text in its correct context, even to the extent of understanding what the word 'Mahabharata' signifies. It is truly said that whatever is in the world is in the Mahabharata, and what is not in Mahabharata is not in the world; thus stating a simple fact that answers to issues that we face in everyday life can be found in this greatest of all epics'. Knowing the Mahabharata in its holistic backdrop is the key to knowing the world as it was then and is even now.

Neera Misra

Neera Misra, an Independent Research Student, focused since 2000 on the research and propagation of Bhartiya Sabhyata, Sanskriti evam Itihasa, to link and nourish the roots of our historical journey. Deep ancestral links to the Vedic kingdom Kampilya, the place of birth and Swayamvaar of Maharani Draupadi, gave rise to her interest in the Vedic, Ramayana, and Mahabharata period history, culture, and its socio-cultural impacts. The misperceptions about our past, especially about our prominent female protagonists disturbed her. Her experiences as a SIDBI-selected and DST trained Entrepreneur, exposed her to such misconceptions. To bring out facts of bygone personalities it was necessary to revisit those times in a structured way. The Founder - Chairperson of Draupadi Dream Trust, established in 2003, she works to create a better understanding and appreciation of ancient heritage legacies, history, geography, and social issues. The Dwapara Itihasa engulfs her being and this is her fifth book on this specific theme, after having published Mahabharata: Its Antiquity, Historicity and Social Impact, Draupadi and Her Panchala, Indraprastha Revisited, Mahabharata Manthan.
